What is Counselling?

Counselling is a skilled form of ‘conversational artistry’ to help relieve the suffering that happens with living. If you’ve simply had enough of struggling with work, your relationships, your own inner voice counselling offers a connection and a way through.

In a session there will be a therapeutic dialogue where hopeful curiosity about what a better life might be like. How that works, exactly, is up to the people in the conversation, and has a foundation of mutual respect.

What is Narrative Therapy?

Firstly, it’s a rubbish name. You can look up the Wikipedia entry for a formal history and context. To me it is a way of working that accepts that we live in a community with pressures and opportunities, that mutual respect is key in all relationships, and that the way we talk about ourselves has a role in making ourselves.

It’s not a technique. It can encompass Solution Focussed ™, person centered, existential, psychotherapeutic, neuropsychological, … Hey, if it’s working for you, it’s working for you. I have training in Solution Focussed techniques, and I’m interested in all sorts of things, but in the end, I hope we’ll find the way of working that gets us where we want to go.

Why can’t you book an appointment with me?

Because I’m a student, and it would be unethical. I’m currently studying at the University of Waikato in the narrative program.
